hydroponic nft system vertical farming indoor agriculture

2026-03-24

Turning a warehouse into a high-efficiency indoor vertical farm was the starting point for this Canadian client. As a hydroponic equipment supplier with established technical expertise and project experience, a multi-layer NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) system was customized based on the actual dimensions of the client’s existing warehouse space, designed for small-scale indoor leafy greens cultivation trials.

The NFT system is optimized for space efficiency, using a vertical multi-layer structure to maximize growing capacity within a limited footprint. Compared to traditional soil cultivation, it significantly reduces land use while maintaining proper airflow and lighting conditions. This allows crops like lettuce, which are sensitive to environmental conditions, to grow steadily indoors. Such vertical hydroponic systems are highly adaptable to urban warehouses, unused industrial buildings, and other enclosed spaces.

By continuously circulating a thin film of nutrient-rich water, the NFT system provides plant roots with a stable and direct supply of water and nutrients, thereby effectively reducing water waste and minimizing the risk of soil-borne diseases. In a controlled environment, temperature, humidity, and lighting can be adjusted according to different growth stages, making crop cycles more predictable and easier to standardize. This approach is suitable not only for leafy greens but also for herbs and some small fruiting crops, ensuring stable production across different seasons and climates, especially in colder regions or areas with limited outdoor growing periods.

The project follows a phased approach, starting with small-scale trials to evaluate system stability, crop performance, and overall yield. During operation, system parameters can be fine-tuned based on seasonal and environmental changes, providing reliable data for future expansion. This step-by-step method reduces initial investment risk while maintaining flexibility in project development.

As the system performance becomes more consistent, the client is planning to expand the growing scale by increasing the number of layers and overall cultivation area, while introducing a wider variety of crops such as different leafy greens and high-value herbs. Through continuous optimization of the customized hydroponic system, the warehouse is gradually being transformed into a productive indoor vertical farm, offering a practical solution for localized production and year-round stable supply.
