NFT System Hydroponic Strawberry: Five Suggestions For Off-Season Strawberry In Greenhouse

Strawberries not only have attractive colors and a sweet and sour taste, but also have the effects of dispelling heat, relieving heat, and clearing heat. In spring, people's liver fire is relatively strong, and eating strawberries can have a inhibitory effect. But because it is a berry with a thin skin and no protective effect, it often rots due to mechanical damage and pathogen infection during storage and transportation after harvest. Strawberries change color, taste and decay after being placed for 1 to 2 days at room temperature, so many people choose to eat and pick them in the greenhouse. Nowadays, picking strawberries in the greenhouse is very popular in winter and summer.

With the promotion and application of hydroponic cultivation technology in China, from the initial planting of vegetables such as cucumbers, tomatoes, and some lettuce, more and more varieties can now be grown using hydroponic cultivation, herbs, flowers, strawberries, and so on. Hydroponics generally use a multi-span glass greenhouse, which artificially controls temperature, light, and nutrients to achieve crop growth.

The limitations of strawberry greenhouse planting are too great, and space cannot be effectively utilized. Moreover, they rely on human experience and cannot effectively utilize scientific technology for daily management. However, these problems are well solved in hydroponics. The most suitable methods for strawberry hydroponics are NFT hydroponics and aerosol cultivation. In order to overcome the common hydroponic cultivation, strawberry roots are immersed in nutrient solution for a long time to grow, causing hypoxia, affecting root respiration, and even causing root death in severe cases. However, the NFT system can avoid the occurrence of root hypoxia.

The principle of the NFT system is to continuously circulate a thin layer of nutrient solution through the crop roots, ensuring a continuous supply of crop water and nutrients, as well as fresh oxygen to the roots.

Five suggestions for using NFT system for hydroponic cultivation of strawberries in greenhouses:

1. Appropriate solution concentration: Maintaining a nutrient rich solution at a slightly higher EC (approximately 2.5) and good potassium levels will help to accumulate sugar in fruits.

2. Suitable pH growth environment: The pH environment suitable for strawberry growth is around 6.85. Excessive or low pH can cause abnormal growth or even death of strawberries.

3. Adequate sunlight: Seven hours of sufficient sunlight per day, strawberries need to be planted in a sunny and warm environment.

4. Select seedlings with excellent varieties, well-developed roots, and no diseased branches or leaves for planting.

5. After strawberry planting, the water level in the container continuously decreases due to the evaporation of the plant and liquid surface, resulting in a relative increase in the concentration of the culture medium, which is prone to drug damage. In order to maintain a relatively stable concentration of the culture medium, it is necessary to master the principle of frequent hydration.

Hydroponics achieves all the nutrients required for strawberries by artificially preparing nutrient solutions. In addition, on cloudy or rainy days, LED plant growth lights can also be used for artificial light supplementation, which is more conducive to strawberry growth.

The NFT hydroponic system can effectively utilize vertical space, making it convenient for manual operation and viewing. Traditional soil culture greenhouses are ground grown, and whether pruning old leaves or picking strawberries, they have to squat or bend down. The NFT channel fully considers manual operation and viewing, and can generally be done standing, which is more efficient.
