A customer from Mauritius reached out to us looking for a suitable hydroponic solution for their rooftop greenhouse project. This project covers about 100 square meters and is mainly aimed at exploring the feasibility of improving local food security and sustainability. In the future, they plan to build similar rooftop greenhouses for around 10,000 households, so residents can have their own small gardens right on their rooftops, become more self-sufficient, and strengthen food security in the community.
The customer shared photos and layout plans of their greenhouse, which is already close to completion. Next, they needed to select the right hydroponic systems. Taking into account their rooftop area, sunlight conditions, and plans to grow mainly leafy greens and fruiting vegetables, we recommended a combination of our A-frame NFT hydroponic system and Dutch bucket system.
The A-frame NFT is ideal for growing all kinds of leafy vegetables and makes excellent use of vertical space, allowing them to plant more crops within the limited area. The Dutch buckets are particularly well-suited for tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and other fruiting crops, and adapt well to the light conditions inside the greenhouse. We also designed a tailored layout for their rooftop, making sure every bit of space could be used efficiently while still leaving enough room for easy maintenance.
Additionally, they plan to purchase some greenhouse materials from us, shipping everything together with the hydroponic systems for easier installation.
This rooftop hydroponics project is truly meaningful. It not only boosts local confidence in food security but also puts unused rooftop spaces to good use, turning them into productive gardens. It’s a great step toward more sustainable and eco-friendly urban agriculture.
